The Golden Pencil: The Freelance Writer’s Resource

Writers and Their Websites!

by Anne Wayman on June 10th, 2005

One of the services I offered when I was with About.com was to list writers websites. IÂ’ve decided to do the same thing at my new site, www.aboutfreelancewriting.com.

The obvious thing was to email each writer listed and tell them what IÂ’m up to. So I plunged in, which means I also looked, at least briefly, at each freelance writers site. Most writers get the web and present themselves well, describing their writing specialties and making it easy for a potential client to contact them.

But about 10% of the writers set up barriers. Two writerÂ’s sites had no obvious email address. Both of those had phone numbers, but thatÂ’s not enough. I find that roughly half of the people who contact me for writing services do so first by email.

Several others had forms rather than a clickable email address. Ok, I know thatÂ’s one way to eliminate spam, but it puts a barrier between you and your client. There are better ways to handle spam.

Probably more than half had a contact page – which is ok, but I think an even better solution is to have both a contact page and contact info at the bottom of each page.

If you want people to buy your freelance writing services, make it as easy as possible for them to contact you.

And if you want your site added to mine, send me an email - and a link back would be appreciated.

Write well and often.
